Modern Karelian trance from Suistamo. Musician and composer Anne-Mari Kivimäki has assembled a unique 10-member ensemble for this concert entitled Lakkautettu kylä [Terminated village]. Accordion trance, hit tunes from the Second World War and archive recordings in the Karelian language are paired with photos ranging from an imagined community entertainment at Suistamo in the early 20th century to the present day. The music, the archive photos and the modern photos taken by Hanna Koikkalainen illustrate the history of Suistamo, exploring the evacuation of Karelians during the war, forced departure from home, and what the present day is like in what is now a tiny Russian village.
